Guest Blog – How to Sell to the Over 60s Online

E-Commerce has hit the mainstream.  These days more and more people are flooding to bargains offered by the likes of Amazon or are looking to snap up amazing deals on the auction site eBay.  But if there is one group that has proven less interested in going online for deals it’s the over 60s.

They haven’t grown up with computers like many people have, and on average will have had less use for them at work. And this lack of experience has brought with it a certain mistrust. This means that to sell to the over 60s you need to ensure that they can trust you.

With that in mind we have gathered together the best tips on how to sell to the over 60s.  Because once you have overcome that mistrust it can be a lucrative market for you, and your products can benefit your customers in a whole new vertical.

E-Commerce Selling to the Over 60s

  • Large product pictures:  Ideally next to your own branded logo in the same shot.  They may be worried you don’t actually have the products you are trying to sell, and are just trying to get them to pay for something they won’t receive.  This can help put their minds at rest.
  • A telephone number: One of the best ways of alleviating concern is to have a telephone number they can ring.  Many will be reassured by it simply being there, but some will like to call and chat.  If possible this can be a great way of establishing trust.
  • Easy to navigate and easy to read:  Consider how easy your site is to navigate for those that don’t use computers much.  And while you’re at it make sure that the font is easy to read (and large) and that the contrast between background and foreground is sharp to help reading.
  • SEO:  You may not think it but SEO is vital for marketing to the over 60s.  Research has found that the majority of people over 65 will use a search engine to find a product, rather than going to a specific site.  So you need to ensure that your site is being found in the search engines if you wish to sell 60th birthday gifts and other products to the over-sixties demographic.
  • Legal disclaimers and certificates:  The over 60s are most likely to read through all the disclaimers and certificates.  So make sure that you include them in your site and easily seen, so that they can be found and read.

There are three vital aspects of selling to the over 60s online.  Develop trust, be easy to navigate and be found.  Sort those out and you’ll be selling to the over 60s in no time.

Guest Blog: Conversion Rate Optimization

Ways to increase your Conversion Rate

Some of the obvious points like site speed and usability aren’t mentioned in this post as you have probably read about them in other articles. My objective was to share some different methods that can work but aren’t usually found in other posts.

Driving visitors to your website is one thing, but getting them to convert is another. While we all concentrate on trying to get more visitors to our sites, we mustn’t forget the importance of conversion rate optimisation as this is a vital part of any online business. Increasing your conversion rate by just 1% can have a huge effect on your sites performance so you must always be looking for ways to improve it.

Conversion rate can be best described as ‘the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action’ so for example buying a product or signing up to a newsletter.

Whenever you think about conversion rate don’t just think about your website, try and think about the external source that brings you the visitor. Think about your search result that appears in Google or your product listing on a referrer’s site.  Can you do anything on this external source that is going to benefit the visitor before they reach your site?  A good tip is to provide the key factors about a product or your desired action to the external source. Below are a few ways that can help you achieve this.

Rich Snippets – Schema.org

Schema.org is a collection of shared vocabularies that you can use to mark up your web pages which help search engines such as Goolge, Bing and Yahoo understand what your page is about. Schema.org is used with micro format data, and can be implemented by marking up your html content with relevant tags.

Samsung have used the Aggregate Rating tag to display their rating reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S2. Other mark ups are available such as price and description. Checkout the schema.org website for the full documentation and a list of tags you can use.

By using rich snippets you are able to inform your visitor with key information which in turn could make their decision to purchase or complete the ‘desired action’ before they’ve even clicked on your site.

Google Adwords – Site links / Ad extensions

If you have a Goolge adwords account then site links and ad extension are great for providing key information to PPC campaigns. Like rich snippets, an ad extension allows you to have rating reviews on your brand and product terms.

 Build Relationships

Your business will also receive traffic from referrers, so a good idea is to contact these sites and provide more information about your ‘desired action’. They will be grateful of this extra information and the attention you’re paying to them. By building relationships with these referrers, means they are more likely to corporate with you in the future and give you a bit more attention or allow you to have more in-depth product details.

As you have started to look at your external sources, you must also look at your existing site and find ways to improve it. A golden rule in optimisation is to test, test, test.

A/B and Multivariate Testing

A/B testing is where you create 2 different landings pages and send 50% of visitor to Page A and the other 50% to Page B. You would then analyse the results to find out which landing page converts better.

Multivariate testing is where you use different variations of content within sections of a webpage simultaneously, for example you could have three different headings and two different images.

Using both these types of experiments is a great way to test your pages but a word of caution, make sure you are testing the different variations with enough visitors to get accurate results.

Google offer a tool named website optimizer which many people use to carry out these two experiments so be sure to check it out.

Think about the visitor

What I mean by this,is trying to think about what questions the visitors may have and how you can answer them. Here are some questions a consumer may have for an ecommerce website.

How much does delivery cost?

How long does it take?

Does this price include VAT?

Is this site secure?

Is the site trust worthy?

Using tools such as live chat can really benefit your business as it provides a live contact with you and your visitor. Using things such as accreditations, reviews and guarantees can help you gain trust with the visitor. Make sure you place things like your guarantee, contact number and live chat above the fold so it’s the first thing that the visitor sees.

By putting yourself in the visitors shoes, will help you realise some key factors that you may be missing on your site. Think about when you visit a site, what things do you want to see or not want to see?

 Express Checkout

Visitors don’t like to enter their credit card details or address details at the checkout anymore; they want a quick and easy solution. By introducing an ‘Amazon like checkout’ you will most certainly increase your conversion rate. If you don’t have an express checkout then take a look at some of your competitors and see how many do. You may just find that you can become one step ahead of them.

If you currently do have an express checkout, advertise the fact that you do. Don’t wait for the visitor to reach the checkout before they realise, show it on your landing pages.

New methods and techniques are always being introduced that can help your conversion rate optimisation so be sure to keep updated by researching and reading online. Always remember to keep optimising as it’s down to YOU, to improve your websites conversion rate.

Web Analytics 103

Over the last 2 weeks we have discussed web analytics, how they can help to improve your website, and looked at 5 of the top web analytics.  Today we are going to talk about how to install our favorite web analytics, Google Analytics.  We are also going to outline 3 best practices after you have installed analytics on your website.

Set Up a Google Analytics Account

1 ) Go to Google.com/Analytics

2 ) If you already have a Google Account such as Gmail, you can use it to sign up for Google Analytics.

3 ) Confirm your email account by clicking the link in your email.

4 ) Click the Access Analytics where you will be prompted to sign up for Google Analytics

5 ) Set up a website profile inside Google Analytics

6 ) Once you have created your website profile you will get the Google Analytics tracking code.

7 ) Copy the tracking code

8 ) Paste the tracking code into your website’s code just above the </body> tag

After you have successfully installed Google Analytics onto your website I recommend gathering data for two weeks before making any changes.  I do recommend connecting your Google Analytics account to Google Adwords if you have already been using Adwords.  The two weeks worth of data serves as a baseline for traffic and other activity on your website.  Once you have had a chance to analyze the data, start making changes to the necessary pages with little time spent on them or that have a high bounce rate.  Analyze how visitors are reaching your site and enhance those methods.

Web Analytics 101

“What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”  We all know this old proverb, but when it comes to your website, I would say this couldn’t be further from the truth.  Knowing which websites referred traffic to yours, what keywords they searched to find you, and how long they viewed specific pages are all crucial information to increase conversions on your website.  Today we’re going to give a brief tutorial on what web analytics are and why you should have analytics installed on your website.

Web analytics is defined as the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of internet data for the purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_analytics).  To further breakdown this definition let’s look at 10 examples of the “internet data” web analytics includes.

1 ) Visitors-Total number of visitors to the site.

2 ) Unique Visitors-Number of new visitors to the site.

3 ) Bounce Rate-Percentage of visitors who leave the site without visiting additional pages.

4 ) Pages Visited-Pages the visitors viewed within the site such as “about us” or “contact us.”

5 ) Organic Keywords-The keywords that visitors searched for in order to find your website.

6 ) Paid Keywords-Paid keywords will only appear if you are using search engine marketing such as Google Adwords.  If you are using search engine marketing, your analytics may tell you which keywords visitors searched for to see your ad and ultimately visit your site.

7 ) Time on Site-How long the visitor stayed on your website.

8 ) Time on Page-How long the visitor stayed on specific pages within your site.

9 ) Page Load Times-How fast your specific web pages loaded in the user’s browser.

10 ) Device Used-Which device the visitor was using to view your site such as a desktop, smart phone, tablet, etc.

Now that we have a better understanding of what web analytics are and the type of information that it provides, why is having analytics installed on your website important?  Simply put, if you are not aware of the amount of visitors your website receives and what type of interaction they have with your website, it is nearly impossible to improve your website’s conversions.  Example:  Your website has 1,000 unique visits per month, which depending on your business may sound good.  But after looking into the web analytics you learn that 900 of your unique visitors left without ever looking past your home page.  Of course if this was the case, I would highly encourage you to make changes to your home page to encourage more interaction.

In our next blog we will cover web analytics 102 which will include some choices for web analytics and installation of the most popular analytics, Google Analytics.  Shine Online Marketing offers Free Analytics with any of our Internet Marketing packages.  Please call us at 601-336-3001 or email us at info@shineonlinemarketing.com for a free estimate.

Facebook Promotions 101

So your small business has created a Facebook Page and now you want to run a contest to attract new fans.  The only problem: How do you run a successful Facebook Contest?   Don’t panic, because today we are going to look at some great Facebook Contest Apps, cover Facebook’s key rules, and talk about what makes a contest successful.

Facebook Promotions

Facebook’s rules for promotions

Before we get into our tips for running a successful Facebook contest and great Facebook contest apps, we need to look at Facebook’s rules for promotions.  I encourage everyone to read the full Facebook guidelines for promotions which are available at here.

The most commonly broken rule that I see with promotions on Facebook is that all promotions must be administered within Apps on Facebook.  That means that everyone you see promoting a contest for wall post submissions, photo contest, etc. that are not using a 3rd party app are violating the rules.  You can have contest in which photos and other entries are submitted as long as it is done through a 3rd party app.

Another commonly broken rule is this: You can’t use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry, aka “liking” your page automatically enters them into the contest.  Liking your page can be a requisite in order to enter the contest, if done so through a 3rd party application.

Facebook contest apps

Now that we have looked at some of the key rules for Facebook Promotions, let’s look at some of the available apps.  My personal favorite apps are Offerpop and Wildfire, due to their ease of setup, analytics, pricing, and in the case of Offerpop, ability to create Twitter promotions as well.  There are several other apps such as:

Freepromos

Fanappz

BulbStorm

NorthSocial

BuddyMedia

Strutta

If you have used or know of other Facebook or Twitter Contest Apps leave a comment below.

Creating a successful contest

Now that you know the rules, know where to find some contest apps, how do you create a successful contest?

  1. Promote your contest: Don’t limit yourself to posting about your contest on Facebook Page.  Run Facebook Ads promoting your contest, Tweet about it, post a blog with a link to your contest, include details about the contest in ongoing traditional marketing.
  2. Have a great prize: The more exciting or useful your prize, the more buzz your contest will create.  While a free trip is wonderful, most business can’t afford giving away a free trip but what you can do is offer your services/products for free or at greatly reduced pricing.
  3. Track your results: If you are tracking the customer interaction throughout your contest, you can adjust it based upon the feedback you receive.  It is also important that if you are having customers sign-up (and you should), you can capture their information.
  4. Have a plan after the contest: Now that your contest is over and you just increased your fans by 40%, what do you do?  Establish a clear goal of why you want more fans, and what your plan is once you start gaining them.  Perhaps you will promote your products, inform your fans, or run another contest.

To sum everything up, make sure you read Facebook’s promotion rules, install a contest app you are comfortable with, and plan for after the contest, not just the contest itself.  Shine Online Marketing offers complete Social Media Marketing packages including social media accounts setup, contests management, and social media pay per click solutions.  Please call us at 601-336-3001 or email us at info@shineonlinemarketing.com for a free consultation.

New Year’s Resolutions for Small Business

No, we’re not talking about losing weight or quitting smoking, we’re talking about New Year’s resolutions for your small business.  Have you thought about it?  Maybe you want to increase sales by 5%, cut your overhead by 3%, or finally start you social media campaign.  We are going to look at a few New Year’s resolutions that may help you decide the best, achievable goal for your small business.

1)      Form an LLC or corporation-If you are operating as a small business, but don’t do so under the protection of an LLC or corporation, now is the time to protect your assets.  Forming an LLC is less expensive than you probably think and should something ever happen in the future, will be well worth the time and money.

2)      Update your website-Investing time into creating a great Facebook or Google Adwords campaign isn’t going to help tremendously if customers are funneled to an out-of-date, boring website.  Update your website to make it more engaging, exciting, and ensure that it is converting those potential customers into actual paying customers.

3)      Start your social media campaign-Once your website is ready to go, make a resolution to block out time for social media.  When 1 out of every 8 minutes online is spent on Facebook, it would be outlandish to pass on engaging those potential customers through social media.  Start out with one or two social media sites, as delving into all of them at once may make your head spin!

4)      Try real world social networking-While social media sites may have all the hype, good ol’fashioned social networking is still worth the time.  Visit your local ADP, business networks, Kiwanis club, or just stop in to other local businesses and introduce yourself!  You may be surprised to find how much connections to other small business owners can help your business.

5)      Optimize for mobile and local search-53% of mobile searches on Bing have local intent according to Microsoft.  By 2015, more U.S. internet users will access the internet via mobile devices than computers.  If your small business is not visible on local search (ex: plumber Hattiesburg, MS) and accessible on a mobile phone, your small business may suffer.

Staying true to all 5 of these New Year’s resolutions may be tough, so pick a one or two that you think could truly benefit your small business.  What resolutions have you already planned for your small business in 2012?  Does one of these resolutions ‘hit the nail on the head?’

The Future of Online Shopping

What will the retail shopping world look like in 25 years?  Will we have brick and mortar businesses or will most retail shopping occur online?  Today we are going to speculate about the possibilities of a mostly virtual retail shopping world.  What would it look like?  Why would an all virtual retail shopping experience fail?

Online Shopping is Growing

Cyber Monday sales increased 33% from 2010 to 2011 according to Smarter Commerce, IBM’s online retail study.  While 2011 Black Friday spending was still significantly more than Cyber Monday, the percent of growth for Cyber Monday grew more than Black Friday when compared to 2010.  Does this show a trend in online shopping growing to become larger than in-store shopping?

What would an online shopping world look like?

Well, it would probably look similar to how it does currently, but with more features.  I still feel like there are a lot of people who like to try on clothes, feel the quality of an item, or hear the quality of those speakers.  To overcome these types of obstacles, online retailers would need to encourage more reviews of their products, have software that gives shoppers the ability to upload photos of themselves and try on virtual clothes, and create other types of software that gives users more of a hands-on shopping experience.

Customer-Retailer Interaction

What about good old fashioned person to person interaction? Some shoppers like to ask questions of the retailer before they buy a product.  There is always that great salesperson that knows just what grandma would love for Christmas.  Could social media be the answer to customer-retailer interaction?  We are already seeing social media become a massive platform for business to customer relations.  Websites like Facebook give customers the ability to have a near real-time exchange with savvy businesses that monitor and respond to customer questions, thoughts, and opinions.

What do you think?

Would you miss shopping in brick-and-mortar stores?  Do you prefer the excitement of shopping at midnight on Thanksgiving Day?  Are you happy sitting in your pajamas purchasing all your Christmas gifts?

At Shine Online Marketing we work with small businesses to develop internet marketing strategies that help your business Shine!  If you would like to receive a free quote, email us at info@shineonlinemarketing.com, or call us at 601-336-3001.  Also be sure to visit our site at shineonlinemarketing.com and subscribe to our RSS feed for all the latest updates.

10 Free Citations for Local SEO

Just how many people using search engines are looking to buy in an offline store?  43% according to comScore Networks.  In a previous post, we talked about the importance of local seo. Building citations is one of the most important factors in local search optimization.  Today I am going to present a list of 10 free citations for local seo that every small business should have.

1)      Google Places

2)      Bing Local

3)      Super Pages

4)      Yelp

5)      Insider Pages

6)      Yahoo

7)      Yellow Bot

8)      Citysearch

9)      YellowBook

10)   Mapquest
