5 Don’ts: Social Media for Small Business

For a lot of small businesses, social media is an afterthought, a “oh yeah I need to post on Facebook today.” If that is your business, I want to challenge you today to re-think how your business approaches social media. As your small business begins the process of creating dynamic social media, consider these 5 don’ts of social media for small business.

1 ) Don’t: Forget to converse-Is your business’ social media more of a presentation or conversation? While presentations can be very informative, they are usually a one-way process that don’t end with the presenter really connecting with his audience. On the other hand, a conversation can lead to a much more meaningful and long-term relationship.  So is your small business presenting or conversing?

2 ) Don’t: Forget to budget for social media-“But social media is free!” Yes, most platforms allow you to freely sign up for an account, but there still maybe some costs involved. What you may have to budget for: social media ads, design work, paying staff for their time maintaining the social media, content creation, and more.  Every business is different, so plan you budget for social media accordingly.

3 ) Don’t: Ask an employee to post without prior training-In last weeks post, we talked about sharing the responsibility of social media with a co-worker.  One point I want to emphasize is ensuring that employee/co-worker is properly trained on the social media your small business uses. Although most people are familiar with the most popular social media platforms, there maybe a learning curve. Ensure that whoever handles your business’ social media is properly trained and given a copy of your social media calendar.

4 ) Don’t: Constantly yell “come to our store” without other useful posts-While you should definitely entice potential customers to visit your store, it should be handled in the proper way. With that in mind, if all your small business posts is “come to our store” this week, are you really engaging with your audience? Let your audience see that you are the authority on whatever you are selling, give pointers, tips, buying advice, etc.

5 ) Don’t: Overly focus on numbers-Obsessing over how many fans your new Facebook Page has isn’t going to help you increase your sales or spread your brand on social media. Concentrate on getting the appropriate message to the appropriate audience in unique and engaging ways and the numbers will take care of themselves. If you are having trouble understanding how to build your social media audience, feel free to drop me an email at michael@shineonlinemarketing.com.

Conclusion: Social media for your small business should be more than an afterthought, but rather should be approached just like every other marketing channel that your business undertakes. It is important to assess your business’ social media on a regular basis to find ways that it can be improved upon. If you have been presenting more than conversing, it maybe time to take a new approach and make some changes that will impact your small business in a positive way.

What do you think about our 5 don’t of social media for small business? Do you have any “Don’ts” that weren’t on our list? Do you or your small business have a social media success story? Leave comment below or tell us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+.

Guest Blog: Conversion Rate Optimization

Ways to increase your Conversion Rate

Some of the obvious points like site speed and usability aren’t mentioned in this post as you have probably read about them in other articles. My objective was to share some different methods that can work but aren’t usually found in other posts.

Driving visitors to your website is one thing, but getting them to convert is another. While we all concentrate on trying to get more visitors to our sites, we mustn’t forget the importance of conversion rate optimisation as this is a vital part of any online business. Increasing your conversion rate by just 1% can have a huge effect on your sites performance so you must always be looking for ways to improve it.

Conversion rate can be best described as ‘the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action’ so for example buying a product or signing up to a newsletter.

Whenever you think about conversion rate don’t just think about your website, try and think about the external source that brings you the visitor. Think about your search result that appears in Google or your product listing on a referrer’s site.  Can you do anything on this external source that is going to benefit the visitor before they reach your site?  A good tip is to provide the key factors about a product or your desired action to the external source. Below are a few ways that can help you achieve this.

Rich Snippets – Schema.org

Schema.org is a collection of shared vocabularies that you can use to mark up your web pages which help search engines such as Goolge, Bing and Yahoo understand what your page is about. Schema.org is used with micro format data, and can be implemented by marking up your html content with relevant tags.

Samsung have used the Aggregate Rating tag to display their rating reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S2. Other mark ups are available such as price and description. Checkout the schema.org website for the full documentation and a list of tags you can use.

By using rich snippets you are able to inform your visitor with key information which in turn could make their decision to purchase or complete the ‘desired action’ before they’ve even clicked on your site.

Google Adwords – Site links / Ad extensions

If you have a Goolge adwords account then site links and ad extension are great for providing key information to PPC campaigns. Like rich snippets, an ad extension allows you to have rating reviews on your brand and product terms.

 Build Relationships

Your business will also receive traffic from referrers, so a good idea is to contact these sites and provide more information about your ‘desired action’. They will be grateful of this extra information and the attention you’re paying to them. By building relationships with these referrers, means they are more likely to corporate with you in the future and give you a bit more attention or allow you to have more in-depth product details.

As you have started to look at your external sources, you must also look at your existing site and find ways to improve it. A golden rule in optimisation is to test, test, test.

A/B and Multivariate Testing

A/B testing is where you create 2 different landings pages and send 50% of visitor to Page A and the other 50% to Page B. You would then analyse the results to find out which landing page converts better.

Multivariate testing is where you use different variations of content within sections of a webpage simultaneously, for example you could have three different headings and two different images.

Using both these types of experiments is a great way to test your pages but a word of caution, make sure you are testing the different variations with enough visitors to get accurate results.

Google offer a tool named website optimizer which many people use to carry out these two experiments so be sure to check it out.

Think about the visitor

What I mean by this,is trying to think about what questions the visitors may have and how you can answer them. Here are some questions a consumer may have for an ecommerce website.

How much does delivery cost?

How long does it take?

Does this price include VAT?

Is this site secure?

Is the site trust worthy?

Using tools such as live chat can really benefit your business as it provides a live contact with you and your visitor. Using things such as accreditations, reviews and guarantees can help you gain trust with the visitor. Make sure you place things like your guarantee, contact number and live chat above the fold so it’s the first thing that the visitor sees.

By putting yourself in the visitors shoes, will help you realise some key factors that you may be missing on your site. Think about when you visit a site, what things do you want to see or not want to see?

 Express Checkout

Visitors don’t like to enter their credit card details or address details at the checkout anymore; they want a quick and easy solution. By introducing an ‘Amazon like checkout’ you will most certainly increase your conversion rate. If you don’t have an express checkout then take a look at some of your competitors and see how many do. You may just find that you can become one step ahead of them.

If you currently do have an express checkout, advertise the fact that you do. Don’t wait for the visitor to reach the checkout before they realise, show it on your landing pages.

New methods and techniques are always being introduced that can help your conversion rate optimisation so be sure to keep updated by researching and reading online. Always remember to keep optimising as it’s down to YOU, to improve your websites conversion rate.

Pinterest 101 Tutorial

Are you  familiar with Pinterest, the newest social media site that is storming onto the social media scene?  If your answer is no, you’re in luck because today we are going to cover the basics of what the site is all about and how to use it.

What is Pinterest?

Although Pinterest began in December of 2009, it wasn’t really until the fall of 2011 that the site rocketed onto the social media scene.  Pinterest is a place to share images online that you find interesting, exciting, or inspiring.  A lot of people are referring to it as the “Twitter for images” although it has many unique features from Twitter.  After images have been uploaded to Pinterest they are referred to as “pins” and can be placed on “pin boards” which can be highly customized.  For those of who who are more visual, think of a pin board at your office where announcements and other pictures are placed, only this pin board is online and can be shared with the public.  For now, you must be invited to join Pinterest unless you know a “pinner” (someone who is already a member of Pinterest) who can easily send you an invite.

How to pin images

The easiest way to pin images is to use the Pin It Button-which is a browser extension.  While using the Pin It Button, as you find images that you like, simply click the button and select the image you would like to pin.  Once you have selected the image, assign it to a Board and add any text that you would like.  You can also easily add a link to an image from a site or upload your own images from your computer.

Add a price

If you would like to add a price to an image, just add the price in the description and it will automatically create a banner of the image with the price listed.

Follow a Board or Pinner

Similar to Twitter, you can follow users that you find interesting.  One difference from Twitter is that on Pinterest, you can follow a specific Board or Boards.  Following someone typically does not require permission and even if someone follows you, you don’t have to follow them back.

Don’t Forget Videos

Although most pins are images, you can also pin videos.  Pinning a video is a great way to spread tips or interest that may require more than one image.

Promoting Your Small Business

While Pinterest can be a great way to promote your small business, I encourage you to be more active in the community than simply pinning products and services.  Be creative in ways that will encourage other pinners to interact with your small business.  Create contests that will allow the community to show their creativity in creating pin boards around products or services that your company offers.

Pinterest has great potential to increase your brand online and reach new audiences through consumer engagement.  Pinterest has already shown great appeal to the general public by gaining over 11 million pinners, with studies showing around 60% of pinners being women in their late 20′s to 30′s.  If your small business has not looked into joining Pinterest, we encourage you to research it and explore the opportunities.

New Year’s Resolutions for Small Business

No, we’re not talking about losing weight or quitting smoking, we’re talking about New Year’s resolutions for your small business.  Have you thought about it?  Maybe you want to increase sales by 5%, cut your overhead by 3%, or finally start you social media campaign.  We are going to look at a few New Year’s resolutions that may help you decide the best, achievable goal for your small business.

1)      Form an LLC or corporation-If you are operating as a small business, but don’t do so under the protection of an LLC or corporation, now is the time to protect your assets.  Forming an LLC is less expensive than you probably think and should something ever happen in the future, will be well worth the time and money.

2)      Update your website-Investing time into creating a great Facebook or Google Adwords campaign isn’t going to help tremendously if customers are funneled to an out-of-date, boring website.  Update your website to make it more engaging, exciting, and ensure that it is converting those potential customers into actual paying customers.

3)      Start your social media campaign-Once your website is ready to go, make a resolution to block out time for social media.  When 1 out of every 8 minutes online is spent on Facebook, it would be outlandish to pass on engaging those potential customers through social media.  Start out with one or two social media sites, as delving into all of them at once may make your head spin!

4)      Try real world social networking-While social media sites may have all the hype, good ol’fashioned social networking is still worth the time.  Visit your local ADP, business networks, Kiwanis club, or just stop in to other local businesses and introduce yourself!  You may be surprised to find how much connections to other small business owners can help your business.

5)      Optimize for mobile and local search-53% of mobile searches on Bing have local intent according to Microsoft.  By 2015, more U.S. internet users will access the internet via mobile devices than computers.  If your small business is not visible on local search (ex: plumber Hattiesburg, MS) and accessible on a mobile phone, your small business may suffer.

Staying true to all 5 of these New Year’s resolutions may be tough, so pick a one or two that you think could truly benefit your small business.  What resolutions have you already planned for your small business in 2012?  Does one of these resolutions ‘hit the nail on the head?’

The Future of Online Shopping

What will the retail shopping world look like in 25 years?  Will we have brick and mortar businesses or will most retail shopping occur online?  Today we are going to speculate about the possibilities of a mostly virtual retail shopping world.  What would it look like?  Why would an all virtual retail shopping experience fail?

Online Shopping is Growing

Cyber Monday sales increased 33% from 2010 to 2011 according to Smarter Commerce, IBM’s online retail study.  While 2011 Black Friday spending was still significantly more than Cyber Monday, the percent of growth for Cyber Monday grew more than Black Friday when compared to 2010.  Does this show a trend in online shopping growing to become larger than in-store shopping?

What would an online shopping world look like?

Well, it would probably look similar to how it does currently, but with more features.  I still feel like there are a lot of people who like to try on clothes, feel the quality of an item, or hear the quality of those speakers.  To overcome these types of obstacles, online retailers would need to encourage more reviews of their products, have software that gives shoppers the ability to upload photos of themselves and try on virtual clothes, and create other types of software that gives users more of a hands-on shopping experience.

Customer-Retailer Interaction

What about good old fashioned person to person interaction? Some shoppers like to ask questions of the retailer before they buy a product.  There is always that great salesperson that knows just what grandma would love for Christmas.  Could social media be the answer to customer-retailer interaction?  We are already seeing social media become a massive platform for business to customer relations.  Websites like Facebook give customers the ability to have a near real-time exchange with savvy businesses that monitor and respond to customer questions, thoughts, and opinions.

What do you think?

Would you miss shopping in brick-and-mortar stores?  Do you prefer the excitement of shopping at midnight on Thanksgiving Day?  Are you happy sitting in your pajamas purchasing all your Christmas gifts?

3 Ways to Improve Your Google Adwords Campaign

If your small business is advertising online, there is no denying that you should be using Google Adwords as part of your online marketing efforts.  Google Adwords has been a proven leader for many years and can really boost your online traffic.  Today we are going to look into 3 ways to increase the productivity of your Google Adwords campaign.

1)      Target Mobile and Tablet devices- Google has announced that search queries from U.S. mobile devices have increased by four times this year.  The number of smart phones, Ipads, and other mobile devices continues to grow at exponential rates, so use this to your advantage.

When in your Adwords campaign, under networks and devices, you can choose to display on desktop and laptop computers, mobile devices with full browsers, and tablets with full browsers.  Select all to display your Adwords advertisements on all of the devices, or you can choose which devices you would like your ads to display on.

2)      Enable +1-This month Google started allowing the +1 capability for Display Network ads.  If users find your ad helpful, they can +1 your ad, which other potential users will be able to see.  If this sounds familiar, that is because it’s very similar to Facebook “likes” via their PPC ads.

Aside from having a “recommendation” for your ad, the +1 on your add will likely attract more attention to your add via the color differentiation.  It sounds small, but even the smallest advantage over your competition may provide large dividends.

3)      Use Keywords and Special Offers-Using keywords in your ads will make those keywords show up in bold and increase your ads relevance.  You can also use dynamic keyword insertion, which will allow your ad to automatically insert the keyword in bold that triggered the ad in the first place.

Adding special offers such as “free shipping” can significantly increase the ROI of your Adwords campaign.  Special offers will help set you apart from your competitors and give users an extra reason to click your ads.

Are you currently using some of these methods in your Adwords campaign?  What other advice do you have to improve Adwords campaigns?

Small Business Social Media-10 Do’s and Don’ts

When 1 out of every 8 minutes online is spent on Facebook, your small business should definitely establish a social media presence.  With that being said, I see far too many businesses that are not using social media to its fullest potential.  Today we are going to talk about 10 do’s and don’ts of social media for your small business.

1)      Do establish your brand on Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media sites that are relevant to your small business.

2)      Don’t setup an account for your small business on every social media site available, but neglect to update the information and interact with your customers.

3)      Do link to current events, statistics, and other information related to your specific industry

4)      Don’t treat your business page as a personal page.  While showing that there is a face behind your small business is important, posting about how your day is going, your dog misbehaving or other personal issues should be posted on your personal profile.

5)      Do use apps to enhance your Facebook page.  There are many great free apps that can enhance your Facebook page such as a contact form, listings for real estate agencies, or create other custom tabs.

"Booger"

6)      Don’t go weeks without posting something new to your social media page.  If your business suddenly stops posting or tweeting, your customers may lose interest in your business and move on to a more consistent competitor.

7)      Do use rich media when applicable including videos, pictures, and other media to engage more customers.

8)      Don’t ignore analytics.  Know who your target audience is, when they are using social media, how often they visit your page.  This information is vital to increasing the ROI of your social media.

9)      Do hold contests and ask your audience questions to increase interaction between your business and customers.

10)   Don’t get discouraged.  Like everything worthwhile, building your brand with social media takes time, stay focused and stay positive!

Farewell Yahoo Site Explorer

With the exit of Yahoo Site Explorer yesterday, many internet marketers and small business owners will be scrambling to find the best alternative.  Today we are going to look at a few alternative options to Yahoo Site Explorer since it was rolled into Bing Webmaster Tools.

Free Alternatives to Yahoo Site Explorer

The majority of these free alternatives limit your ability to research backlinks in one way or another.  Some limit the amount of searches per day, while others will only provide the number of links for a particular page which can be very time consuming.

SEOmoz Open Site Explorer

Majestic Site Explorer

Web SEO Analytics

Searchmetrics

Free Plugins

These plugins, like some of the free alternatives, only provide the number of links for the individual page that you are viewing.  While using one of these tools may help to get a quick snippet of how many links a particular page may have, it is difficult to see the overall picture of the site’s complete link data.

SEOBook Toolbar

SEO for Firefox

Paid Alternatives to Yahoo Site Explorer

Unfortunately, the best alternative to Yahoo Site Explorer may indeed be a paid version.  The tools listed below range from $99 a month to almost $500 a month.  Personally I love that SEOmoz includes several other tools in their monthly fee aside from link data.

Link Research Tools

SEOmoz Open Site Explorer

Majestic Site Explorer

Linkdex

Wholinkstome

Farewell Yahoo Site Explorer, You Will be Missed.

Were you a fan of Yahoo Site Explorer?  What will you use as an alternative?  If we left off your favorite tool please leave a comment below and let us know!
